Resum

Abstract

In Mallorca, it was not until the printer Hernando Cansoles i Villarroel set up a second printing workshop on the island, which was operative from 1640 to about 1601, that editions richly decorated with engravings could be found. During this period, engraving, as an art, was conditional on the needs of the printing workshop, and engraving utensils normally formed part of the workshop’s equipment. Thus engravings were often exchanged, copied or sold by one workshop to another. The printers themselves often moved around. For this reason, the same or very similar engravings can be found in editions printed in very distant places. Indeed, Cansoles, and this is the subject of this paper, re-used or copied woodblocks from the mainland to illustrate many of his editions.
